Bench Vice Consists

The bench vice consists of the body, sliding jaw, handle, screw, nut, spring, cotter pin and washer (Fig. 4.11). The handle, screw, nut and washer made of steel whereas the sliding jaw and body made of cast iron. Separate cast steel plates called jaw plates fitted to the jaws by means of set screws. These jaws have serrations to hold the job firmly.

The threaded screw is made to pass through the movable jaw at the outer end. It carries a handle at the outer end and a collar at the inner end. The collar prevents the vice from coming out of the jaw when opening the vice. It also restricts maximum opening of the vice.

Since the bench vice fitted on the bench, it is not possible to change the height of the vice or the vice itself. Thus, care is needed when installing a vice on the bench so that it is at a suitable and convenient height. For general light work, the height of the top of the bench vice should be at level with the elbow of the worker. For this purpose, the height of an average man is selected as the height of elbow of individuals vary. For heavy work, the bench should be set lower by 6 to 10 cm.

While using a vice, the following precautions should be taken.

(i) Always set the workpiece in the centre of the jaws.
(ii) If it is necessary to hold the job on one side of the jaws, then use a piece of steel, or wood. On the other hand to keep the jaws parallel and free from excessive strain.
(iii) The job should project out of the jaw as little as possible and must be parallel to the jaws since they act as a guide for even working.
(iv The length of the handle of the vice must be sufficient to tighten the job. Never use a hammer or lever arm to tighten the workpiece.
(v) Never use a vice for fitting or straightening the job.
(vi) Fix the vice rigidly to the work bench with the help of nuts and bolts.
(vii) Clean the vices regularly and oil its moving parts before use of smooth working.
